Husband and I have just started our AP system a few wks ago, decided to start with goldfish as novices. The guy at the aquarium shop told us his veg growth was greatly improved once he had trout rather than goldfish. Is this anyone else's experience too? Thanks

I doubt very much he would have had as many goldfish as he eventually go trout.

The system also matured in the process - the trout might well have died had he started with them.

    Hi Vanessa... Welcome!

If you have a look at the links in my signature at the bottom of this post, one is for my indoor system, which was started on 6 small (8cm) Shubunkins (goldies).

If you click on the link and then run your cursor over the photo's and read the info that pops up, one of the photo's that shows a number of large lettuce in the AP system will say "4 weeks in", or something similar... the system was still being powered by 5 Shubunkins at that stage and the plant growth was brilliant.

Also, If you have a look at the link for my "single blue barrel system"... it started out with yabby power but I swapped them out for some goldies because the yabbies weren't producing enough poop... the goldies are powering the system just fine.

    Cheers, Yabbies.

imho, the quality of the feed you use for your fish will be the biggest determining factor regarding plant growth

I have found that down here in melbourne over winter that goldfish started to eat very little but the trout just kept gutsing( if that is a word) down feed by the bucket load no matter how cold.
However for the first year i would not have used trout unless the system was well established.
I tried perch but they did not go well so i think goldies are best to start.

    cheers Byron
